Description
Main objective: To scan and provide unrestricted access to all maps published by the Wojskowy Instytut Geograficzny (1919 - 1945) of Poland. The maps cover the pre-1939 Poland and some neighboring areas and were drawn in the 1: 10 000 to 1: 500 000. They are often the only trace of the landmarks and human dwellings destroyed during and after WW2 and as such provide invaluable insight into the past. At present paper copies of those maps are available in both the US and Poland libraries as well as in private collections. They are accessible on-site (several US libraries) but in Poland and other countries of Central and Eastern Europe access is severely restricted, or in some cases, the maps are completely off-bound to visitors. We aim to fill in the gap by making the maps available online to all the people who might be interested in the maps for any reason, be it genealogy, history, recreation or etnography. Related objectives: 1. To geo-reference the maps for use with GPS receivers and (potentially) to link them to a modern database of satellite images provided by Google Earth. 2. To provide searchable database of map-associated placenames, mainly for genealogy purposes. 3. To scan and make available all other topographic and tourist maps of the area of Central Europe dated (approx.) 1870 -1945, mainly by K.u.K Militaer-geografisches Institut (Austria) and Reichsamt fuer Landesaufnahme (Germany)in order to provide cross-reference of information available from WIG maps.
