- Years: 1937 - 1970
- Project Description: Historical aerial photographs dramatically document changes in Florida's land use. The initial Aerial Photography: Florida collection was funded by two Florida Library Service and Technology Assistant grants from the Florida Department of State.
Between 1937 and 1975, the U.S. Department of Agriculture created more than 100,000 black and white, 9 x 9 aerial photographs with 1,000 accompanying photomosaic indexes of Florida. Due to the unstable nature of the photographic negative's sodium nitrate composition, the U.S. government destroyed archival negatives for the earliest photos. As a result, the aging hardcopy photographic prints are all that remain of this historic resource.
Originally intended to assist farmers determine accurate assessments for their farms and to provide information on crop determination and soil conservation, today these images provide some of the oldest land use/cover information available. They are used extensively in agriculture, conservation, urbanization, recreation, education, hydrology, geology, land use, ecology, geography, and history.
The University of Florida Map & Digital Imagery Library houses the largest and most complete collection of Florida aerial photographs (~160,000 photos) outside of the National Archives. Two of three planned imaging phases have resulted in digitization of more than 1,000 photomosaic indexes and 88,000 aerial photographs shot between1937-1970.

- Project Description: The objective of digitally archiving all 675 plates from Bowker and Hughes' "Lunar Orbiter Photographic Atlas" is nearing completion. Each Lunar Orbiter 16" x 20" print was captured using the Olympus D-600L digital camera and digitally recorded as a ~1 megabyte, grayscale, jpeg formatted image. Image resolution is 300 m/pixel or 60% lower resolution than the original hardcopy print.
The digital Lunar Orbiter Atlas of the Moon is a reproduction of the 675 plates contained in Bowker and Hughes. The digital archive, however, offers many improvements upon its original hardbound predecessor. Multiple search capabilities were added to the database to expedite locating images and features of interest. For accuracy and usability, surface feature information has been updated and improved. Lastly, to aid in feature identification, a companion image containing feature annotation has been included.

Following this, the department answered the demand for access to historical county atlases by selecting pre-1923 atlases from its collection for digitization. Now almost half the counties in the state of Iowa are represented by this collection of digital county landownership atlases. In addition, the State Historical Society of Iowa has begun to digitize their extensive collection of Iowa county atlases and load them onto this site.

- Project Description: The University of Minnesota Libraries' John R. Borchert Map Library is in the process of digitizing 12 plat books that represent 13 volumes altogether and that range in date from 1884 to 1916. One title covers all of Minnesota geographically, while the other books focus on the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area, defined as Hennepin, Ramsey, Carver, Scott, Dakota, Washington, and Anoka Counties. These rare books represent one of the most requested components of the map library's collection for reference and research, and this digitization project will allow many patrons to consult maps without the need to access physically the pages of these fragile materials. High-resolution images will not be readily available for download, but they can be purchased at low cost. - Years: 1861 - 1893
- Project Description: The Hotchkiss Map Collection contains cartographic items made by Major Jedediah Hotchkiss (1828-1899), a topographic engineer in the Confederate Army. Hotchkiss made detailed battle maps primarily of the Shenandoah Valley, some of which were used by the Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson for their combat planning and strategy. Several of the maps have annotations of various military officers, demonstrating their importance in the military campaigns. The collection also includes maps made or used by Hotchkiss during his post-war years, including maps with information about railroads, minerals and mining, geology and history, most of which focus on Virginia and West Virginia, but also cover other states and even the world.
The collection consists of 341 sketchbooks, manuscripts, and annotated printed maps, the originals of which reside in the Library of Congress' Geography and Map Division.

- Project Description: The Illinois State Library owns one of the two definitive collections of the Illinois state highway map. This historic run is so valuable for so many purposes that the State Library map staff chose to scan the state highway map as one of its first web map access projects. The State Library holds the Governors/Div. of Highways/IDOT version as well as the Secretary of State's version but only the Secretary of State's version was scanned except for some years, such as the 1950's and 1960's, when only a Div. of Highways version was published. The collection begins in 1917, when the roads were trails and were named instead of numbered, through the early years of Rt. 66, the beginning of the interstate highway system, and finally up to the present day.

A few of the cartographers represented in the collection are: Willem Jansoon Blaeu (1571-1638), Matthaus Seutter (1678-1756), and Tobias Conrad Lotter (1717-1777). Due to heavy curricular use of the maps, we began digitizing and uploading images to CONTENTdm's server in September, 2005. We currently have 364 images uploaded and will continue untill all 501 sheets maps are digitized and cataloged. The originals are housed in Special Collections at Musselman Library.

- Project Description: The Louisiana Purchase is a landmark event in American history, one that had a lasting impact not only on the size of the United States, but also on its economic, cultural, and political makeup. Before President Thomas Jefferson's administration purchased the territory in 1803, parts or all of the territory had been under the control of various Native American nations. From the 16th century onwards the Spanish and later the French controlled the territory.
This presentation focuses on the various documents --from maps to newspapers to cultural artifact --that help to describe the region of North America that stretched from as far east as Alabama into what is now the state of Montana. The 119 items presented here come from the various special and general collections of the Library of Congress.

- Project Description: The Geography and Map Division collections contain a good representation of materials, both temporally and culturally, pertaining to the city and territory of Macau. These materials are both printed and manuscript maps, atlases, and views dating from 1655 to 1991. They represent an array of languages with a variety of map scales. There are maps of the city itself and the surrounding territory; there are also maps of the adjoining provinces -- particularly Guangdong, and the coastline. One map is in Latin, although it was published by the Dutch. There are several French and British items, a German item, and a Russian item. Obviously, Chinese and Portuguese materials are also represented. From this variety, it is apparent that there has been a wide interest in Macau among Europeans during the last five centuries.
Web page is in English, Chinese and Portuguese.

Title: Mapping the National Parks

- Metadata Compiled: Yes
- Metadata Format: MARC
- Number of Items: 400
- Scale: varies
- Years: 1600 - 1999
- Project Description: Documenting the mapping of the national parks online is a project that has expanded through several stages. At the request of the U.S. Geological Survey, twenty-six maps of Yellowstone National Park were scanned to commemorate the park's 125th anniversary. The items included were selected by Geological Survey staff, and they became one of the first cartographic collections made available as part of American Memory.
The criteria for choosing maps of three additional parks (Acadia, Grand Canyon, and Great Smoky Mountains) to join the Yellowstone collection in creating Mapping the National Parks included diversity of geography and topography and their popularity as travel destinations. Acadia, Grand Canyon, and Great Smoky Mountains National Parks vary greatly in their histories of discovery, exploration, and development, as well as in their location, geology, and physical and cultural environments.
To exemplify the ways in which maps can be assembled to trace the history of a place, the online presentation about each of these three parks includes the history of the place, not merely of the park, from the time of its discovery and exploration by Europeans to the present. How and why each of these locations became a national park reflects the broader themes of American history. For this reason, each presentation relates topics, such as conservation, land use, the transportation revolution, and the desire to embrace the beauty of nature, to the establishment of the national park.
Although the maps included in this collection were produced to be used for a variety of purposes, such as reconnaissance and other military activity, geological studies, landownership, and transportation, each map is also a primary source that tells the story of the region as well as of the park through the history of its mapping. In the future, maps of other national parks will be added to this collection as resources become available.

- Scale: Various (mostly 1: 100 000, 1: 25 000, 1: 300 000)
- Years: 1919 - 1945
- Project Description: Main objective:
To scan and provide unrestricted access to all maps published by the Wojskowy Instytut Geograficzny (1919 - 1945) of Poland. The maps cover the pre-1939 Poland and some neighboring areas and were drawn in the 1: 10 000 to 1: 500 000. They are often the only trace of the landmarks and human dwellings destroyed during and after WW2 and as such provide invaluable insight into the past. At present paper copies of those maps are available in both the US and Poland libraries as well as in private collections. They are accessible on-site (several US libraries) but in Poland and other countries of Central and Eastern Europe access is severely restricted, or in some cases, the maps are completely off-bound to visitors. We aim to fill in the gap by making the maps available online to all the people who might be interested in the maps for any reason, be it genealogy, history, recreation or etnography.
Related objectives:
1. To geo-reference the maps for use with GPS receivers and (potentially) to link them to a modern database of satellite images provided by Google Earth.
2. To provide searchable database of map-associated placenames, mainly for genealogy purposes.
3. To scan and make available all other topographic and tourist maps of the area of Central Europe dated (approx.) 1870 -1945, mainly by K.u.K
Militaer-geografisches Institut (Austria) and Reichsamt fuer Landesaufnahme (Germany)in order to provide cross-reference of information available from WIG maps.

- Years: 1849 - 1899
- Project Description: The University of Minnesota Libraries' John R. Borchert Map Library is in the process of digitizing 63 historical maps of Minnesota from its collection of rare maps. These maps are unique not only in their artistic appeal but in their ability to portray visually the region's transition through history from a young territory in 1849 to a rapidly developing state in 1899. These often hand-colored maps are of great value to a diverse, interdisciplinary audience. Most of the maps in this collection assist researchers in several disciplines by portraying the continually evolving boundaries of the territory or state, counties, and townships at the time of publication. In this way these materials document the development of Minnesota as a political entity, the progress of the westward settlement of Minnesota, and the progress of the federal government's official public land survey which was conducted in Minnesota between 1848 and 1907. One of the qualities that makes this collection unique is that it consists of one or several maps of Minnesota for almost every year between 1849 and 1899, allowing very close inspection of minute boundary changes across the region. High-resolution images will not be readily available for download, but they can be purchased at low cost. Once the images have been made available online, please make such requests known using the contact information below.

Geologic and topographic maps are being collected, scanned, georeferenced, and preserved by the NCSU Libraries as part of the North Carolina Geospatial Data Archiving Project in collaboration with the US Library of Congress. The legacy geologic and topographic maps have no digital counterparts and paper copies are scarcely accessible. Geologic and historic maps are in high demand, and are critical for earth science instruction and research. Digital georeferencing provides new capabilities not possible with paper maps by allowing other data to be overlaid by using GIS software. Geologic maps, including collars, are scanned to a 300dpi TIF file with a large format (42 inch) scanner. Using ArcMap 9.1's georeferencing extension, at least four geographic locations were interactively selected from the TIFF based on coordinates and grids printed on the maps. ArcMap creates a table of these selected coordinate values, and with USACE CoprsCon software, each coordinate pair is converted to NC Stateplane NAD83 meters and then appended to the table. ArcMap then creates a .TFW world file and transforms the TIFF image so that it is represented in the data view in Stateplane Coordinates. Each image file is rectified with ArcInfo workstation and compressed with MrSID. As of March 2006, the inventory consists of 115 U.S. Geological Survey geologic maps, 136 North Carolina Geological Survey geologic maps, 47 maps from theses and dissertations, and 165 legacy 15-minute topographic maps, all of which are backed up on multiple secure servers. Data are disseminated through the NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources and NCSU Libraries, and contributed to NCOneMap and the National Geologic Map Database and National Geologic Map Image Library.

Title: North Carolina Historic Topographic Maps Scanning and Georeferencing Project

- Metadata Compiled:
- Metadata Format:
- Number of Items: 185
- Scale: 1:250,000, 1:62,500 mostly
- Years: 1891 - 1969
- Project Description: The NCSU Libraries has compiled an extensive collection of historical
topographic map images of North Carolina that can be downloaded for free from the Web site http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/gis/historictopos.html.
The collection contains superseded US Geological Survey and US Army
topographic maps, with dates ranging from 1891 to the 1960s. Over
one-third of the maps were published prior to World War II and are known
as "15-minute maps" because they cover 15 minutes of latitude and
longitude. Many of the printed originals are maintained in a collection by the North Carolina Geological Survey (NCGS). Others were loaned by the UNC Maps Collection for scanning.
The digital collection is composed of both georeferenced JPEG 2000 format images and lossless (unaltered) non-georeferenced JPEG 2000 images. JPEG 2000 is a relatively new, yet widely supported image format that offers superior compression performance.
The georeferenced images may be used in GIS software to provide a
historical basemap when overlaid with other current spatial data to
identify changes in landscape features. The lossless images, when
plotted, appear nearly identical to the original scanned map.
To find the map image you would like to view, you can scroll the list
online and pick from the map sheet names. Alternatively, you can use the
index shapefiles or Google Earth KML index files to identify the maps
that cover your area of interest.

- Project Description: The panoramic map was a popular cartographic form used to depict U.S. and Canadian cities and towns during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Known also as bird's-eye views, perspective maps, and aero views, panoramic maps are nonphotographic representations of cities portrayed as if viewed from above at an oblique angle. Although not generally drawn to scale, they show street patterns, individual buildings, and major landscape features in perspective.
The majority of items presented here are documented in PANORAMIC MAPS of Cities in the United States and Canada, second edition (1984), by John R. Hebert and Patrick E. Dempsey. Hebert and Dempsey compiled a checklist of 1,726 panoramic maps of U.S. and Canadian cities, the bulk of which were done by Albert Ruger, Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler, Lucien R. Burleigh, Henry Wellge, and Oakley H. Bailey who prepared more than fifty-five percent of the panoramic maps in the Library of Congress. Additional panoramic maps will be added to this presentation as they are acquired by the Geography & Map Division.

- Project Description: The maps presented here are a selection from the Geography and Map Division holdings, based on the popular cartobibliography, Railroad Maps of the United States: A Selective Annotated Bibliography of Original 19th-century Maps in the Geography and Map Division of the Library of Congress, compiled by Andrew M. Modelski (Washington: Library of Congress, 1975). This annotated list reveals the scope of the railroad map collection and highlights the development of railroad mapping in 19th-century America. Described are 623 maps chosen from more than 3,000 railroad maps and about 2,000 regional, state, and county maps, and other maps which show "internal improvements" of the past century.
The maps selected represent a profile of the development of cartographic style and technique and are not intended to inventory all maps in the division which show railroads. The list does reflect, however, the important achievements of early railroaders in reaching their ultimate goal of providing a transportation network spanning the country and linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
The list includes only separate printed and manuscript maps preserved in the Geography and Map Division. Excluded are photocopies, facsimiles, atlases, and maps which are included in annual railroad company reports or which illustrate volumes classed elsewhere in the Library of Congress.

- Project Description: The 'Sanborn Fire Insurance Company Maps of Florida' comprise a collection of more than 300 bibliographic units in more than 3,000 map sheets.
The maps were mainly designed to help fire insurance agents determine the degree of damage to a property and show accurate information to help them determine risks and establish premiums. They showed the size (including color-coding), shape and construction of buildings (brick, adobe, frame, etc), dwellings (including hotels and churches), and other structures such as bridges, docks and barns. Along with fire stations, you could also find water facilities, sprinklers, hydrants, cisterns, and alarm boxes as well as firewalls, windows, doors, elevators and chimneys and roof types. The maps included street names, property boundaries and lot lines, and house and block numbers. Other information such as the latest census figures, prevailing winds; railroad lines and Indian reservations and topography were included. Today, the maps are an invaluable guide to inner-city history, land use, and historic preservation.
This collection of public domain maps was digitized from the printed maps held in the collections of the Smathers Libraries' Map & Imagery Library, on the campus of the University of Florida (Gainesville, FL).

- Metadata Compiled:
- Metadata Format:
- Number of Items: 3761
- Scale: var.
- Years: 1573 - 1995
- Project Description: Five years ago a project was begun to catalog and gain access to one of Huntington's large en bloc collections, a collection of printed maps. As with many institutions, maps were considered an "other" -- not a book easily classified or catalogued -- and often individual maps that came into the Huntington orbit were given an accession number, perhaps minimal cataloging, and then shelved. In 1924 Mr. Huntington purchased an entire catalogue, some 800 maps, from the Museum Book Store in London, entitled A Catalogue of Maps of America from the Middle of the Sixteenth to the Middle of Nineteenth Centuries. Three years later another catalogue was also purchased, an additional 1000 maps. The printed maps from these two catalogues, known as Catalogue 93 and 105, went into the Rare Book vault where they lay for the next 60 years virtually untouched. In 2001, Alan Jutzi, Curator of Rare Books at the Huntington, asked Bill Warren if he would like a crack at cataloguing the Museum Book Store Map Collection. Bill, a volunteer with a background in engineering and map collecting, enthusiastically agreed, and set about studying map cataloging; Laura Stalker, then Head of the Huntington's Technical Services, and Dorothy Auyong, Head Rare Book Cataloguer, were exceptionally helpful and with suggestions from several sources a database began to take shape. Database construction was handled by Mario Einaudi, a cataloguer in the Technical Services Department, who had been working on a large collection of maritime ephemera. Fields for the database were defined using AACR2 and various sources on the use of those rules. It was agreed that the database would need to be as comprehensive as possible, but also easy to use so that scholars could find pertinent maps.
Full title and imprint information was recorded. When available, the author or cartographer, engraver, and printer were recorded, along with depiction date, printing date and location. Alternate titles were included, as was the language of the map and any atlas where it may have appeared. In addition, physical properties were transcribed: size of the map and sheet on which it was printed; the estimated scale; along with the current geographical coordinates covered. Characteristics of projection, relief, printing method, watermarks and verso were described and recorded, as well as any points of special interest. Each map was then rehoused in a non-acidic folder. The success of cataloguing the Museum Book Store maps led to using the same database to describe in more detail maps of California and the West in the Huntington collections. The Huntington has everything from a copy of Ord's first map of Los Angeles to Beverly Hills tract maps from the 1930's. In addition, Bill's excitement with using the program led him to volunteer and catalogue two other collections, those of the Pasadena Museum of History and the Altadena Historical Society. Both of these are small and locally oriented collections that needed better accessibility and the institutions enthusiastic accepted Bill's help. Over the next several years, as a result of cataloguing all three collections, a Union Catalogue of California and Western Maps was developed. This Union Catalogue, a work in progress, currently contains 3,700+ records of California, the West, and North America from the listed collections. Additional entries will be added, and some records evaluated and reviewed, as available. Please note that each institution holds the copyright for the images used in the database.
